The success of any initiative dealing with digital preservation
hinges on the quality of communication between professionals who manage media
collections and leaders within the digital storage industry. By concentrating
on elemental concepts of how data and information about that data might be
stored through time, the Universal Preservation Format initiative is attempting
to construct a bridge between engineers and information scientists, between
